City recycles Christmas trees into habitat at Riverfront Park
Since the early 1990s the city has recycled up to 50 000 trees into Riverfront Park landfill site. Pruett notes rows 15 feet wide 80 feet long formed by compressed trees create wildlife habitat while remaining material is pressed and rearranged. About 2 000 trees are collected annually with numbers trending down as artificial trees rise. The annual live-cut collection occurs the first week in January with curbside pickup by 6 a.m. on residents service day after New Year holiday.
