Salt Memorial Marker Relocated Near Reno County Site

The Salt Memorial Marker marking 1887 salt discovery in Reno County was moved to the original discovery spot. The U S Highway 50 project closed the former site and moved the marker northward, with new plaques and a 1 260 pound salt block planned for display. About 15000 from Kansas Department of Transportation funded the pad and relocation, including right of way. In 1887 Ben Blanchard aimed to strike oil near the Arkansas River but hit a salt vein.
