Community policing credited in Wichita crime drop
Wichita officials credit community policing for lowering crime to levels not seen since the late 1980s. Drive by shootings fell 38 percent, rapes 17 percent, aggravated assaults 20 percent, and thefts 7 to 9 percent, while burglaries rose slightly due to a busted ring. Police say more officers on streets and closer community ties are reducing gunfire and improving trust. Despite gains, Wichita faces 32nd homicide and ongoing gang threats with two young victims noted.
