County names attorney as pro tem judge for Douglas County
Lawrence attorney Bethany Roberts, a specialist in domestic cases, is appointed judge pro tem for the Douglas County District Court starting Jan 2. The move adds a second pro tem in the 7th State Judicial District to speed felony and juvenile matters and certain civil dockets while pro tems cannot preside over felonies. Roberts is an adjunct Washburn Law professor and former managing attorney for Kansas Legal Services, after earning her KU law degree in 2003.

Salina Tech launches practical nursing program
Salina Area Technical College in Kansas will offer a practical nursing program starting next fall for up to 40 students. Greg Nichols, college president, said over 50 applications have already been received and graduates will earn a practical nurse certificate enabling LPN licensure. The program costs about 13 000 to 14 000 dollars with tuition pending board approval, and the college aims to expand to a registered nursing program in 2019 as the state faces a chronic nurse shortage.
