President Truman announced in Kansas City that George F Kennan will become the new U S ambassador to Russia. The 47 year old diplomat, a principal author of containment policy, succeeds Rear Admiral Alan G Kirk who is retiring. Kennan, a Milwaukee native, has 25 years in diplomacy with Moscow tours and posts in Eastern Europe. He is expected to assume the post in April after Senate confirmation.
Miss Tressx Pierson RN has been appointed chief nurse at Rensom Memorial Hospital Ot tawa and will join the Lawrence Douglas County Health Department. She, 54, starts mid January after months at Lawrence Me Hospital. Dr H R Wagenblast said resignations reduced staff to one and a second nurse is sought.
A late night blaze on South Kansas Avenue damaged two small one story buildings and virtually wiped out Blue Boy Antique and Gift Shop Peters and Rasch Barber Shop and Fred Buckner's Antiques. Parr and Parr's storeroom and the Crankshaw and Deeress ermyer art workshop were also damaged as crews fought the flames.

Gus Hall, one of 11 convicted Communist leaders, drawn for contempt of court, sentenced to three years for failing to surrender to begin a five year term and violating a court order. The sentences run concurrently with his five year term and He fled to Mexico. Federal Judge Sylvester J. Ryan imposed two three year contempt terms to be served after the main term.
Cairo and Alexandria witnessed protests over King Farouk's cabinet choices with police firing on rioters. Buckshot wounded 15 students in Alexandria as demonstrations spread to secondary schools. Parliaments near the Parliament Building saw a streetcar set ablaze and mass arrests as order was restored. A 12 year old Douglas County boy was wounded by a rifle shot in woods southwest of Lawrence and transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital in critical condition. Sheridan projected a January 15 tentative city date for his replacement, as the highway agency plans to shift final details to a successor by mid February.
Tokyo December 27 Allied and Communist steps clear the way for prisoners of war to exchange letters with families. Relatives should address letters to APO 100 Care Postmaster San Francisco. U N spokesmen say mail from prisoners held in North Korea will be delivered once permission is given. Reds delivered 603 letters yesterday, arriving in Tokyo and handed to U S army postal authorities.
