A Christmas Eve tour southeast of Lawrence ended when a Whipnet driven car missed a bridge at Deichmans Crossing and plunged 30 feet into the Wakarusa river. Five injured were taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, with driver Marion Payne 21 listed in critical condition after skull fracture and other wounds. The other injured were Fern Hadl 18 Ruby Hadl 16 Jesse Hadl 16 Florence Taylor 17 and Buford Taylor 21.

Three Liquor Raids Reported by County Officers
County officers staged liquor raids Saturday evening and arrested Dora Jackson of near Clinton. They raided the Jackson farm home northwest of Clinton, confiscating 15 gallons of mash and about five gallons of altered whisky. Miss Jackson is charged. A second raid targeted a filling station operated by Carl Wickersham on Highway 73W, two miles south of Lawrence. Deputies Anderson, Vaaler, Price and McKitterick found liquor and poured from a pitcher into a water barrel. a test will be made. No arrests were reported, pending chemical test results.

The city commission will receive bids tomorrow at 10 AM for the foundation and tower of a new water tank west of the University campus to serve the high level district. The package includes an 8 inch cast iron main, 5000 feet of three conductor cable, automatic control equipment, a 350 gallon pump, and the pumping station to be at the KU power plant. The engineer’s estimate is 8900 dollars, and a prior contract for the steel tank was 7490 dollars. Delivery is expected around January 10. The department has completed five blocks of new water mains and ordered pipe for 15 more blocks under a federal grant.
