Mother and four children die in Mass. home fire

Cecil T. Hough is named chair of the advance and special gifts committee for the 1953 Douglas County Red Cross fund drive, with Keith Lawton as general chair. The drive, in March, aims for an advance quota of about $4,000 and a county goal of $18,010 a 5 percent rise from 1952. The national goal is $393 million, up $1 million from 1952, with $7 million earmarked for expanding the blood donor program and gamma globulin supplies to aid polio testing. Blanket of Snow Covers Wide Kansas Belt
A snow blanket three to 11 inches deep stretched from the southwest corner through central and northeastern Kansas Monday as a weekend storm continued dumping snow in the northeast. Blue Rapids led with 11 inches, Norton reported nine, and drivers faced ice and drifting as Western Kansas faced hazards. The storm was easing in western areas with only light snow in extreme northwest while much of the state remained impeded by ice on wires and long distance cuts in several towns.

Cliff Dean Dies Former Lawrence School Chief at 53
Clifford D. Dean 53 of 1130 Tenn Street Lawrence died at Lawrence Memorial Hospital after major surgery. A Kansas Wesleyan and KU graduate, he started as a high school principal in Wilson and Hays, then Russell, later becoming Lawrence school superintendent for six years before entering private business with New England Mutual Life. Active in civic and church affairs, he chaired the First Methodist official board and Wesely Foundation trustees, and served on Salvation Army, Chamber of Commerce, and Red Cross boards.

Kansas basketball star Davenport injured teeth in collision
KU sophomore Basketeer Larry Davenport, 19, suffered two front teeth knocked out and an eight stitch gash after a collision in Saturday's 72 55 loss to Kansas. He joked about dental attention while awaiting a bridge, and hopes to play in the upcoming Big Seven Tournament.
