A C 124 Globemaster carrying service members home for Christmas crashed near Moses Lake Washington burning after impact. A military spokesman reported some dead some hurt and some escaped unhurt with no immediate casualty estimate available.
A C-124 Globemaster on a routine training flight from Larson AFB to Kelly AFB Texas crashed two miles from Larson, killing 134 aboard including service members hitching a holiday ride. Gasoline spills, flames, and rapid rescue followed as crews evacuated to Moses Lake area hospitals.
Kansas University football and basketball star Gil Reich will not have an operation on his injured right index finger and will report to coach Allen for basketball practice Monday. Gil Pruyn from Ellsworth and John Konek, a junior halfback, will undergo knee treatment next week at KU Medical Center in Kansas City. Reich’s finger, swollen after a broken bone, will be rechecked after basketball season to determine if an iron is needed.
Lawrence Memorial Hospital will close Monday for a thawing period as conditions affect operations. The Dine-A-Mite event, scheduled through Friday, will reopen later in the week once the thaw improves access and safety.
President elect names civilian executives to helm Army Navy and Air Force departments. Robert Stevens of New Jersey becomes secretary of the army, Robert Anderson of Texas secretary of the navy, Harald Talbott of New Jersey secretary of the air force. Roger Kyes of Michigan named deputy secretary of defense. Eisenhower aims for cost efficiency without compromising national defense through business experience.
Northwest Kansas may see a few snow flurries while most of the state stays cloudy with little precipitation. Eastern Kansas temperatures rise Sunday after a Saturday dip, with lows 10 to 20 and highs 20 to 40. Western Kansas snow cover reaches six inches around Russell, moisture mainly in rain near 24 hours ending Saturday. Hill City reports five inches on the ground. Dodge City and Garden City have one to three inches. central areas show one to two inches. Ice encases parts near Herington and north central Kansas.
A man jailed in Owensboro for stealing two checks from a doctor's office and forging the medical papers confessed his penmanship. Police found the forged signings on a scrap of paper near the doctor's desk.

Severe winter weather disrupted travel across the central United States. The precipitation belt stretched from Arkansas to the Great Lakes and lower Ohio River valley with up to seven inches of snow in the far north. Hazardous highways and air travel were reported, while temperatures neared zero in northern Minnesota and freezing rain persisted into parts of Iowa Nebraska and Kansas.
The Kansas Corporation Commission recessed until January 12 its hearing on a six cent hike in the minimum well heat price for gas in the Kansas Hugeton Field. Earlier affidavits named Joseph O Keefe, 44, as one of the Brink's robbers.
State highway patrol reported three Friday crashes near Lawrence with one slight injury. A car rear ended a school bus on Highway 10 east of Eudora injuring none but totaling the car front. Another collision on Highway 10 east of Eudora left Ford’s car rear ending McIntosh’s pickup, Ford hurt, car about $300 damage. The third crash north of Lawrence involved Blevins and Raines on U.S. 2 with both cars sideswiped, about $350 damage each.
In Tulsa Oklahoma William Elza reports catching a two headed imouse in a trap. The creature reportedly loped from the trap with a piece of cheese still affixed. Local scientists seek verification.
Taft of Ohio appears set to win the GOP Senate floor leadership as party unity surfaces. Eisenhower’s backing and assurances from Bridges and Knowland ease earlier opposition while Carlson signaled the President elect’s approval. A Jan. 3 Republican meeting will pick leaders and fill posts.
L B Read Jr was elected president at the fall meeting in the Municipal Building succeeding M N Penny. New officers include M B Winter Sr vice president Byron Beery secretary and Corlette Cotton treasurer. Directors chosen serve until Dec 1953 and 1954, with plans for Lawrence centennial in 1954 and calls for items over 10 years old for display. Prof George Aderson spoke on local history. Penny and Mrs Berry hosted refreshments.

Douglas County placed third in Kansas in the 1952 Christian Rural Overseas Program campaign, contributing 2700 dollars toward dried milk for Western European refugees. Clay County led with 2907 and Stafford with 2765. Total state contributions reached 62011 from 82 counties, with an expected state total of about 75000 toward the 100000 goal. Shipping orders reserve two carloads from Hillsboro coop for Germany, Belgium, and France, and another two carloads to Germany, Italy, and Trieste will follow. Douglas County drive occurred in late November, below the 3400 goal at 76 percent, with Herve Hoskinson chairing and Fred Bremer as treasurer, Emma Berg as secretary, and L. C. TOPEKA The first government estimate of the 1953 Kansas wheat crop places it at only 37 percent of this year’s record harvest. Dry weather and subsoil moisture at planting time reduced acres seeded to wheat by five percent and December 1 condition was the lowest since 1939. The federal and state Departments of Agriculture project the 1953 crop at 114,520,000 bushels, compared with 307,629,000 in 1952 and the 10 year average of 197,903,000.

Trinity Lutheran schedules a 9:30 Sunday school, candlelight and communion. Plymouth Congregational features If He Had Not Come and Christmas Flower with baptisms and a Christmas pageant. First Baptist minister Dr. Elliott preaches When the Day Star Visited Us with caroling by youth groups. First Presbyterian urges White Christmas gifts to families they adopt, with a Glory to God sermon by Rev Patton. Trinity Episcopal lists communion, church school, choral eucharist, and a midnight service. St John’s Catholic will hold five masses on Christmas Day and a midnight mass Christmas Eve.
The police department will overhaul traffic violation collections around January with four part tickets and attached summonses. Violators receive two reminder slips. unpaid fines lead to warrants about two weeks after issue. New system records payments with time and date, aided by speed traps using painted white lines and timing mirrors to deter violations.
Dr P-Republican John M Dewey has started his tenth four year term as Alexander County circuit clerk in Cairo. He asserts the forty years will set the longest continuous service record for any current elective Illinois office holder.
