Handicapped American of the Year Aims High
Roger W. Irving, a 72 year old Birmingham born former electrician and salesman, who lost his right arm at 17 and later lost his vocal cords to cancer, was named Handicapped American of the Year by the Presidents Committee on Employment of the Handicapped. He now teaches vocal rehabilitation with the VA Center and universities, helping patients learn esophageal speech after throat surgery. Irving has aided over 100 people and views his work as a personal ministry despite hardships including the loss of two sons and financial reverses.
