Panamas Canal To Be Replaced With New Sea Level Route

President Johnson announced a plan to replace the Panama Canal within 10 to 15 years with a sea level Atlantic Pacific canal. The move ends the 1903 treaty, seeks new site surveys in Panama Colombia Nicaragua or Costa Rica, and proposes a treaty recognizing Panama sovereignty while preserving U S run rights until the new canal opens. Panama's President Marco A Robles called it a historic day.

Warming Trend Expected Through Sunday in Lawrence

The Lawrence area sees warmer temperatures today with forecasted cloudy to partly cloudy skies through Sunday. Southerly winds 25 to 35 mph will diminish tonight as the low drops to the lower 20s and Sunday’s high nears the mid 30s. Friday’s high 24, low 3, overnight 10 at 10 pm. By 8 am the temperature was 24 and noon hit 32 with trace dry snow and no accumulation reported.

Wichita Coed Nabs Bandit At Point of His Own Gun

Judy Jershin an 18 year old Wichita State University freshman helped capture Richard Lee McCarther a 22 year old armed robber by reaching across and grabbing his 38 caliber pistol during a car jacking attempt on campus. Police tailed the fleeing suspect after a tip and he was taken into custody without further incident.

Cause Unknown In Blaze At Station

Fire at Blackburns Super Oil Co. in Lawrence destroyed the station and contents. Firemen battled in 15 degree weather for about an hour. Officials suspected the grease pit as the origin with gasoline tanks nearby posing risk if above ground. Burl Blackburn reported insurance but not enough to cover total loss. Fire chiefs planned mutual aid due to jurisdictional contracts.

Car Hits Montgomery Ward Store Front. Driver Claims Brake Failure

About 8:20 p.m. Friday a car struck the corner of the Montgomery Ward building at 825 Mass. St. Damages totaled about 250 dollars with the vehicle costing 100 dollars. Sammy Allen 17 of 1000 N.J. St. said brakes failed and he swerved to avoid another car. No injuries were reported.
