A Saturday column argues Watergate exposed long term White House laxity across administrations. It urges voters in 1976 to demand integrity, accountability, and stronger press and Congress oversight as the United States nears its Bicentennial.
After a year of crises Albany approved a 600 million tax package targeting corporations and banks. The plan raises corporate income tax to 10 percent and 20 percent surcharges retroactive to 1975, plus banks see tax hikes to 12 percent with a 30 percent surcharge.
In Pittsburgh two men bookended Christmas wishes. Ronald J. Phillips, 46, was released after spending 15 days for wearing a Santa suit and handing out candy to children in Waynesburg, aided by a $36 bail paid by an anonymous benefactor. Victor Scuille, 26, told jailers he wanted to go to jail and was jailed after his drunken driving case and revoked bond.
In Vancouver Washington senior citizens man phone lines from 1 pm to 8 pm as part of a parks department project. The Six Million Dollar Man replaces Evel Knievel as the top requested toy, with volunteer Santa figures taking the calls. Pacific Northwest Bell installed the lines at no cost.
The Senate approved the 6.5 billion rail bill by 51 to 29 and the House by 205 to 150, sending the measure toward a potential veto by President Ford. The plan consolidates Penn Central and six Northeastern lines into ConRail with 2.1 billion in loans plus 400 million for branch lines and 2.4 billion for Washington to Boston high speed service. It would also shift rail regulation toward freer rate setting by carriers with ICC oversight only for below cost rates. Meanwhile in Kansas, cigarette license renewals must be filed by December 31 or face penalties of up to 1,000 dollars or one year in prison.
Joe Mallatratt, blind for a decade, regained sight in one eye after a Christmas time operation. The Willow Grove resident, a former truck driver with a wife and three children, received a special optical lens and hopes to have the left eye treated after the holidays.
Three of President Ford's children Susan Steve and Michael will fly to Vail Colorado on a C141 military cargo plane for an early Christmas ski vacation. Michael's wife Gayle accompanies them. The trip to Grand Junction carries communications gear for the presidential visit and costs will not be charged to taxpayers.
In Tripoli, 53 year old Moslem governor Sheik Kassem Imad was assassinated by unknown gunmen as his wife was wounded. The government warns of a wave of political killings aimed at inflaming Lebanon’s eight month civil war. Security officials offered no suspects. Palestinian guerrillas vow to protect Lebanon’s territorial integrity amid sectarian clashes.
