A. A. Murphee, 57, president of the University of Florida and former head of theAmerican Association of University Presidents, was found dead in Gainesville of heart disease. The death was confirmed by reports from Gainesville on December 20. In Washington, the House approved the alien property bill, by 223 to 26, planning the ultimate return of German property seized during World War I and settlement of war claims.
Washington December 20 AP Representative Griffin Democrat New York asked today for a House committee to investigate the sinking of the navy submarines S-4 and S-51. The request calls for a formal inquiry into the incidents and the circumstances surrounding the losses.
In San Francisco on December 20 a tri motor Spirit of California ended its endurance flight at Millsfield after 49 hours 27 minutes in the air. Exhausted fuel forced a landing nine hours and 27 minutes short of the world record, as higher than expected gasoline consumption suggested the mark would not be equalled.
In Provincetown Massachusetts naval rescuers led by Rear Admiral Brumby faced escalating danger as the sunken S-4 showed faint signs of life and the surface crew reported dwindling hopes. Repairs, weather, and rough waters hindered diving while S-8 kept watch nearby. Topeka announces that the state highway commission aims to complete one east west and two north south all weather surfaced highways under the 1928 program. Plans include U S No 40 from Kansas City to Denver and U S No 81 and 73 routes sanded graveled or paved with a Topeka Wichita link to surface toward Ponca City Oklahoma. The proposed No 4 Eskridge to Topeka, No 11 Eskridge to Emporia, No 50 Emporia to Newton and existing paved segments are noted. A large effort on No 50 west of Wichita is also planned. Six commissioners attended.
Federal, state and county highway engineers plan a field trip to inspect the 6 mile link south of Lawrence and the 3 mile approach to the Douglas county line. The aim is to bring the entire north and south segments of highway 73 to standard grade and paving readiness.
