School board names finalists for new superintendent
The district will reveal the three finalists after first round interviews, with public meet and greet planned in the week of Jan. 22 before a second round. The board aims to announce the successor by February, to start July 1, 2018. The board also seeks 2018 session funding priorities to protect K-12 from deficits. Shannon Kimball will present the list to legislators on Jan. 5.

Shelter nonprofit eyes 2013 loan and January audit
Lawrence Community Shelter board president Jackie Counts said audits are scheduled in off peak periods to save money. Treasurer John Magnuson noted the board approved and sent the audit to the city last month while five applications exist for the executive director role. The board plans to fill the job by mid January after dismissing Trey Meyer in October and discusses $54,000 in 2018 county funding to open a cold weather shelter. An amended special‑use permit is needed to house 15 to 25 people Oct–Mar, with a meeting set with Douglas County Administrator Craig Weinang.

Wonder book drive at Lawrence Public Library MLK event
Lawrence Public Library will give away 1000 copies of Wonder at 1 pm January 15 in the auditorium during the MLK Day of Service. The event includes a diversity storytime, Ava DuVernay's The 13th screening, and a Hy-Vee lunch from noon to 1 pm, with partnerships between the library, Lawrence Public Schools and the Lawrence Schools Foundation.

Lawrence man arrested after stolen vehicle pursuit
An injured driver not life threatening, a 28-year-old Lawrence man was arrested on suspicion of possessing a stolen vehicle after a deputy attempted to stop the car. The vehicle had been reported stolen from a Lawrence residence minutes earlier. Charges had not been filed as of Monday morning.

Crash on US 169 leaves man dead at scene
A driver overcorrected and collided with southbound Metcalf on US 169, blocking both lanes. Metcalf died at the scene and was transported to a funeral home. Thom Nguyen, 42, of Houston drove a semi with a 57-year-old Houston passenger. neither was injured. Seat belt use under investigation.
