A car in the 1000 block on Massachusetts Street burned Monday afternoon causing about $600 in damage. No injuries were reported. Firemen attributed the blaze to an oil breather cap blowing off and striking the generator. Owner Fred Kaul, 1439 Tenn. St., was identified.
Kansas University assistant coach Bill Pace resigns after four years with coach Jack Mitchell to take the back field coaching post at Arkansas. Pace, a former Wichita player and KU quarterback coach, will join Frank Broyles’ staff in time for Sugar Bowl preparations against Alabama. Pace succeeds Hayden Fry, who moves to SMU.
Dr. Carl Knox was named Lawrence superintendent of schools effective Aug 1 on a two year contract at 13 500 annually by the Board of Education. He comes from Olathe where he held the same post. Wolfe retires after 12 years leading the district.
A district court jury found Walter Dale Sanders of Lawrence guilty of assault and battery after about 214 hours of deliberation. He received a six month jail sentence for the June 8 incident in which he struck Giles Erickson in the head with a lead pipe. Erickson recovered.
Washington dispatch says the Army is distributing a 111 page white paper to National Guardsmen and Reservists called up. It outlines the Berlin crisis rationale and answers key questions about mobilization, deferments, and the need for trained reservists.
Three Lawrence firms were named apparent low bidders on five more Stouffer Place apartments at KU. Constant Construction Co. bid 431213 for general work, Huxtable Electric 39240 for electrical, Norris Brothers 65720 for mechanical. KU received a 600000 loan from Community Facilities Corp. of the HHPFA for the 60 apartment project.
Lawrence residents have until Wednesday to pay the first half of personal property taxes, with full payment required if late, before buying 1962 vehicle license tags. Col. Robert Ash of KU Air Force ROTC arranged two loudspeakers downtown to play Christmas music, hoping to boost holiday spirit for shoppers.
The Netherlands government said it is willing to negotiate a settlement of the New Guinea issue with Indonesia through the United Nations. It rejected Sukarno’s mobilization order to “liberate West Irian” and proposed a 17 nation UN committee to help implement last year’s colonialism resolution.
Kansas University closes for a 14 day Christmas vacation as more than 10 000 students depart for home. Vacation begins officially at 6 p m with many already traveling by train or bus due to hazardous Midwest highways. Classes resume at 8 a m Wednesday January 3.
Washington AP reports FAA Administrator N. E. Halaby was fined 50 for a brushing wing tip incident at Washington National Airport. Halaby said he approves of the agency enforcement action and notes it is his only accident in 28 years of flying.
Cox notes mornings have been slick due to moisture that freezes on roads. When snow covers streets drivers use chains or snow tires, reducing accidents, but mornings with moisture freezing catch motorists off guard and lead to crashes.
President Kennedy flies into Washington after a Palm Beach rest period to fight a cold. Air Force jet landed at National Airport due to weather, with a 4 p.m. NSC meeting planned and a news conference expected Wednesday. The trip began in San Juan Puerto Rico, with earache from altitude changes noted.

Firemen worked to cap two burned pumps as they prepared to pump foam on a gas and oil blaze. Chief Sanders noted foam is for gas and oil fires, while Rausch said workers were coping lines to the damaged pumps and planned to start north pump operations after capping is complete.
Three persons were treated in the Lawrence Memorial Hospital emergency room for non traffic injuries. John Evjen a Kansas City Missouri junior at Kansas University suffered a concussion and fractured shoulder in a sledding accident and was admitted in good condition. Bernard Grace of 2119 R I St received treatment for a cut on his hand with stitches to close the wound.
Mrs. Ruth Fry of 728 Ohio Street was treated this morning for a nose cut from a mishap at home.
