British RAF reports Italian troops retreating toward Derna Libya as RAF planes hit Bardia and Derna ends of the line. British forces push into Italian Somaliland near Wak, with 50 defenders killed and 120 captured. Offensive patrolling along the Kenya frontier noted.
British and Australian troops stormed Bardia Libya as heavy rains turned desert mud and cold hindered both sides. The Royal Air Force and British ships bombarded the fortifications outside the town while ground fighting focused on prewar Italian defenses five to six miles from Bardia.

Roy Rogers in Days of Jesse James headlines at Patee theater at 9 30 and Jayhawker at 10 30 with a comedy novelty and cartoon as short subjects. Admission is a can of fruit or vegetables. donations support baskets to be distributed December 24 from 820 Massachusetts street.
A five member delegation from Kansas rural electrification units urged Gov. Payne Ratner to back a 1041 legislative bill to broaden REA cooperatives powers. They noted only 20 percent of Kansas farmers have electricity and said the measure would ease forming new cooperatives by removing some corporate commission jurisdiction. The 24 units represent 19 000 members. Delegation members include J B Keeler Glen Elder Charles L Taylor Solomon Joseph Nelson Lee Farmer and Darrel Dunn.

W W Gerstenberger of Eudora was elected president of the Douglas County Farm Bureau at the annual meeting held at Trinity Lutheran church. Robert Jardon of Palmyra was named vice president, and Mrs William Wymer of Kanwaka was secretary and treasurer. A ten member board of directors was elected with one member from each township. The crowd enjoyed a luncheon despite poor weather, and a pageant Farm Bureau Frontiers was performed with multiple members participating.
Washington reports Princess Hohenlohe of Hungary, linked to Nazi groups, ordered to leave by Saturday after the Justice Department refused an extension of her visa. Officials say her Nazi associations render her presence inimical to U.S. interests.
J Pge Glaser Brownlow a 22 year old Drury College senior died in a hospital after his car plunged off a travel road. Coroner Ned White ruled death by his own action noting a pistol bullet struck Brownlow in the temple as the vehicle sped. He was son of Marvin Brownlow of Evanston Illinois, a Chicago insurance executive, and had been in poor health. The ad at Roberts Jewelry announces a gift set.
Washington December 18 Representative Dirksen labeled Roosevelt's proposal to lease and mortgage war supplies to Great Britain as an ingenious and transparent effort to circumvent the Johnson act and the neutrality act. He argued the credit and loan provisions aim to keep the U.S. from involvement in Europe and could compel soldiers to defend investments.
Mrs. Belle Bales of 10383 New Hampshire street escaped serious injury when her Plymouth slid off an ice covered pavement near an overpass south of Tonganoxie and rolled 40 feet down a bank. She remained in Memorial hospital resting comfortably with a broken rib and bruises. Deputy Turner cited a truck driver’s report of the skid down the embankment and aid from Guy Church and Bill Fincher at the scene.

Riverside photographer reports a very large army bomber crashed six miles from Idyllwild. Four bodies were seen outside the wreckage after the aircraft struck a tree, possibly causing the crash.
The ministry of economic warfare said it had information that more than 856000 children were removed from Berlin Hamburg and the Ruhr district to southern and eastern Germany due to the intensity of British bombing raids.
The agriculture department released final 1940 crop estimates. Wheat total reached 816,698,000 bushels versus 751,435,000 last year. Corn declined to 2,449,200,000 bushels from 2,602,133,000. Winter wheat 589,151,000 and spring wheat 227,547,000. Oats 1,285,620,000. barley 309,235,000. rye 40,601,000. Kansas leads winter wheat with 14.0 bushels per acre and 123,648,000 bushels. Kansas corn 41,028,000 and oats 43,596,000.
Lawrence Children’s Theater plans a community production of Rip Van Winkle by Washington Irving for March 21 and 22 at Liberty Memorial High School. The show aims to promote American literature, Americanism, and teach Dutch heritage through music and dance with Douglas County schools and civic groups invited to participate.

In Middlesboro Kentucky two men fled after a run-battle where a deputy sheriff was killed and two officers were wounded. Walter B. Smith Bell county attorney led a search by Kentucky Tennessee and Virginia officers aided by three airplanes in what he called the biggest man hunt in eastern Kentucky mountains. Authorities believe the suspects fled before a general alarm was broadcast.
