Car Fumes Fatal To Two In Ottawa

In Ottawa county a young mechanic Clarence Kirkland 23 Princeton Kansas and Judith Herschell 21 of Ottawa were found dead in a parked car from carbon monoxide poisoning. They apparently died while sleeping with the girl in the front seat and the man in the rear. An exhaust leak near the muffler was being checked by the sheriff’s office.

Shopper Sprees Bring Grins From Lawrence Merchants

Lawrence merchants report a Christmas buying surge Saturday with sales up 13 to 20 percent over last year and some stores forecasting as much as a 30 percent rise. Out of town shoppers, including KU students, helped push totals while shops like Hillcrest Hardware and Montgomery Ward noted strong demand for washers, dryers, and freezers.

Summerfield Scholarships A Legacy At University Of Kansas

The Summerfield Scholarships at the University of Kansas were established by Solon E. Summerfield to aid Kansas youths in obtaining higher education. The program features need based stipends, four year renewable awards, and annual scholar colloquia. Since 1929 nearly 400 scholars from 129 Kansas high schools have graduated, with many achieving Phi Beta Kappa honors and other national distinctions.
