KU and higher ed reporter Sara Shepherd details the discovery of a 1939 radio interview with James Naismith. The audio, found by researcher Zogry after months of work, features Naismith describing the first basketball game and a notable 77 year old spectator in Madison Square Garden. Naismith's KU legacy marked by long tenure and historic rules
James Naismith served at the University of Kansas for about four decades starting in 1898 as chapel director and educator, coached the KU basketball team 1899 to 1907, and was KU's first athletic director. He died in 1939 and is buried in Lawrence. A 2010 auction secured his original Rules of Basket Ball for a Lawrence project, with Sotheby's noting the record sale. KU plans the DeBruce Center beside Allen Fieldhouse to preserve the rules and audio relics, opening in 2016.
