Colorado investigates a deadly school bus train crash near Greeley. Frosted windshield visibility and an overloaded fleet are cited while 13 children remain in hospital and 20 died. Driver Duane Harmis suffered minor injuries.
A 23 year old school bus driver Donald Harris was charged with manslaughter after a collision with a passenger train near Greeley Colorado. Twenty children died and the bus was struck while en route from Chicago to Denver. Witnesses described the abrupt crossing and failure to stop within legal distance at the crossings.
Two Kansas City men, Gary Sanford Gardner and John Edward Meadows, were arrested for forging payroll checks drawn on the Southeast State Bank of Kansas City. Merchants aided police after alert witnesses reported the men cashing checks in Lawrence, with possible additional suspects. FBI may be called as the case involves interstate commerce.
In Kansas Union Ballroom a 500plus audience heard Soviet diplomat Fomin and five KU professors discuss future U S Soviet relations. They debated disarmament colonialism and exchanges with Fomin urging more people to visit the USSR and for leaders to address the Senate.
The Omaha World Herald reports rumors that Hank Foldberg has a deadline this weekend to decide if he will take the Nebraska football coaching post. Wichita athletic director William Dye offered Foldberg the job at Nebraska and also proposed a combined coaching and athletic director role at Wichita.

The College of Emporia Board of Trustees announced the financially distressed Presbyterian college will stay open. Elvin Perkins said plans include a fund raising campaign in Emporia, seeking gifts from individuals and industry, and an alumni campaign targeting $50,000 by June 1.
Judge Charles Rankin said the case is under advisement after a County Court hearing on the welfare of two Emery children. The couple, Eugene Ray and Mrs, were sentenced on cruelty charges and placed on parole. officers found a 34 year old boy bound with rope and the other child in a crib. The County Welfare Department recommended another chance for the parents, and the wards are in a foster home in another county.
Indian U.N. detachments pushed north into Elisabethville, advancing toward Katanga defense positions four blocks from the secessionist capital. Heavy fire and mortars marked the day’s fiercest engagement as U.N. and Katanga forces battled. A Katanga air raid hit the U.N. held airport, while U.N. and U.S. diplomats sought a peace settlement with Tshombe and Adoula amid continued fighting.

Bids for installing boiler controls and oil storage at the Kansas University power plant were opened in Topeka. Trooper John Atkinson stopped two men in Nevada Missouri for a minor infraction and learned they were sought for murder in Virginia. Joseph Riddick 24 and William Potts 17 confessed to slayings of a truck driver and a cabbie, with Riddick claiming the shooting. They are held in Nevada awaiting extradition decisions.
Six Kansas University architecture and architectural engineering students won prizes at the Kansas Concrete Masonry Association dinner in the Kansas Union. First, second and third place awards of 50 30 and 20 dollars went to Design III and IV entrants Julian Ominski Michael Kephart Larry Hansen Philip A Lawrence Jr John Rollin Allen Gary D Altican and Charles D Ogden with honorable mentions William K Kahmann and others. State architect James Canole spoke.
In the 10th Federal Reserve District sales fell 3 percent from the similar week in 1960 while the national volume rose 1 percent. Albuquerque led gains at 28 percent, with Joplin Tulsa Topeka and Denver also up. Declines appeared in St Joseph Kansas City Omaha Lincoln Wichita and Greater Kansas City.
