The first of two Christmas season events memorializes Alfred Bromelsick at Oak Hill Cemetery with 4-H Girl and Boy Scouts joining at Central Junior High for a wreath laying. A second Bromelsick party at KU Hoch Auditorium on Dec 23 will include singing, movies, Santa, and treats for about 2300 youths, with tickets via unit leaders.
Independent contractor E L Smart reported that production casing at the N. D. Messer No 1 well near Pleasant Grove has been cemented to 1467 feet as a completion attempt continues. Evidence of oil exists though success is not guaranteed and Humble Oil and Refining Co. provided the test acreage.
Douglas County State Bank in Lawrence debuts a new modern branch of Colorado pink sandstone and black glass with dark blue trim. The former bank, started in May 1952 with 100000 capital and 100000 surplus, now reports capital and surplus near six hundred thousand. The building adds two drive in lanes and parking for 45 cars on the Old Manual School Blossom Shop site.
Raymond E. Perdue, 29, of 1512 West Ninth Street, received minor injuries when his car struck a parked vehicle in the 600 block of North Third Street about 12:20 a.m. He was treated at Lawrence Memorial Hospital and released. Bach’s car at 603 North Third Street was pushed over a curb into a mailbox. total damage about $1,000. Perdue suffered a cut lower lip and one tooth was knocked loose.
Hillcrest School schedules a 2:30 p.m. Friday Christmas concert featuring trumpet and violin solos, choir selections including What Child Is This and Silent Night, and narrations by Janet Nelson and Tim Smith. Pupils from kindergarten through fourth grade perform with Joshua angels and a fifth grade prayer.
The first Youth Yule Sing for the Interdenominational Youth Council of Lawrence is from 7 to 10 tonight at the Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints, 1900 University Dr. KU graduate student Donna Lou Pyper will lead the songs, followed by a fireside fellowship.
Funeral services for Byron Norvin Sauder of Prairie Village were held at Colonial Congregational Church after his death on December 8. Burial followed at Forest Hill Cemetery in Kansas City. He was born March 21, 1917 in Newton and earned degrees in civil engineering from Bethel College and Kansas University, with a Harvard sanitary engineering master's. He served as a captain in the U S Army Sanitary Corps during WWII and worked for Black and Veatch in Kansas City. Survivors include his wife Margaret and two children.
The Lawrence Kiwanis Jayhawk Club meets at 6 p.m. in the Hotel Eldridge with 29 members expected. Officers include James Thomen as president and Lester Furlong as vice president. charter set for Feb. 3 in the Kansas Union ballroom.
The session featured Dmitri Fomin and Henry A. Kiss Schlesinger discussing co existence, disarmament, and a free demilitarized West Berlin as part of a broader debate on Soviet and American approaches to peace. A panel including Alf Landon and state legislators followed with 38 seminars on global issues.
Washington AP says the federal Civil Defense program sent to Congress will cost about 700 million dollars. It includes incentive payments for shelter construction in schools hospitals and welfare institutions while not funding individual home shelters. The plan targets shelter space for about 20 million people in the coming fiscal year with projects started after January 1 eligible for incentives. A January booklet on fallout shelters will be released and a fact sheet outlines the government view on a potential all out attack.
Grandma Moses, the 101 year old celebrated primitive artist, died 12 days before Christmas at the Hoosick Falls Health Center after a long illness. Her late start in painting in her 70s brought world wide fame and her works adorned millions of Christmas cards.
George Meany 67 secures a new two year term as head of the AFL CIO at a Florida convention. He consolidates authority over the 12.5 million member federation and gains tools to address internal and racial issues.
President Kennedy serves as honorary chairman with Dwight Eisenhower as chairman and Joyce Hall as executive chairman. Johnson, a 1956 Olympic silver medalist turned gold winner, says he is through with track. KU began the program on March 8 1960 at a Mt Oread kickoff dinner with student leaders. Hallmark Cards sponsors the program.
A Lawrence boy, 9, Thomas Waters, is listed in critical condition at Kansas University Medical Center after a sledding crash on Campanile Hill at KU. His 13-year-old brother Merrill Waters is reported in good condition at Lawrence Memorial Hospital with a possible back injury.
Lawrence Kansas University students contributed 3110.17 to the campus chest drive this year, a sizable gain over last year's 1900.00. Trophy winners include Battenfeld Scholarship Hall, Kappa Sigma, Sellards Scholarship Hall, Alpha Omicron Pi, and Delta Gamma. About 450 will fund the Dukes of Dixieland concert. At Haskell Institute, three trucks delivered 450 pieces of furniture for three new buildings, with occupancy hoped by year’s start. Albuquerque supervisors oversee the project.
Design and Construction branch of the Bureau of Indian Affairs reports no original Grandma Moses works in Lawrence. Hallmark Cards reproduces her paintings but none of the originals hang in the Lawrence plant offices. Kansas University Art Museum also lacks one of her originals.
