Barry Goldwater Names Nixon as Front-Runner for 1968
Senator Barry Goldwater singled out Richard Nixon and governors Hatfield Romney and Scranton as possible 1968 Republican contenders. He said Nixon holds the strongest hand, ruled out another White House bid for himself, and defended party leadership while blaming campaign fear tactics for his loss. He added Eisenhower would have beaten Johnson and noted Romney and Rockefeller influenced the primary slate. Goldwater claimed no other candidate could have carried as many states as he did.
