Johns Hopkins detects lung cancer via skin resistance test
A new ten minute skin electrical resistance method designed by Dr Curt P Richter at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine aids early detection of some lung cancers affecting the sympathetic nerves. It measures skin resistance with two batteries and electrodes mapped on a body diagram. Public Health Service grants supported recent tests.

Land Gift to KU Endowment Supports Engineering Studies
Henry and Darwin Ahrens donate a 130 acre unimproved tract seven miles northwest of Paola to the Kansas University Endowment Association. A 17-year-old Lawrence youth, Harold Wayne Morton of 1805 La. St., was found incapable of standing trial on a third degree burglary charge. He will be sent to Larned State Hospital for the Criminally Insane after a hearing conducted by a three-doctor court appointment commission. Morton and another juvenile were apprehended in the Fred Kurata home at 1656 Ind. St. on Aug. 20.

KU Professor Menton Takes California Post
Seymour Menton of Kansas University has been named professor of Spanish and Portuguese and chairman of the Foreign Languages Department at the University of California in Irvine. The appointment starts February 1. Menton led the Junior Year in Costa Rica Program as resident director in 1960 and held a Smith Mundt grant for Brazil studies in 1961. He became editor of Hispania, the quarterly for Spanish and Portuguese language teachers, in 1963.

Family History: Edna Hundley’s Atchison Marriage and Birch Family
Edna Hundley married in Atchison County and raised seven children. Siblings include Mrs. Belshe and twins Marshall G. Birch of Wichita and Harlan F. Birch of Shawnee. Lt. Albert E. Birch lost his life on Armistice Day November 11, 1918 in Beaumont France. Two children died from poisoning and another from diphtheria.
