Kansas lawmakers brace for school funding shortfall in coming year
In the 2013 session Republicans set base state aid at 3838 per pupil for this year and 3852 for next year starting July 1 2014. New estimates show a 17.8 million shortfall this year and 19.9 million next. Without extra funds aid could drop to 3812 this year and 3823 next. Lawrence district would lose about 456 645. Lawrence school board president Rick Ingram declined to speculate while Senate Democrats push for a base aid increase. Governor Brownback faces tax cuts and a Kansas Supreme Court school funding lawsuit that could force higher funding by up to 500 million annually. Reporter Peter Hancock contributed.

Markets Slip Sharply Across Major Avenues
Thursday's trading saw the Dow dip 104.10 points to 15,739.43 while the Nasdaq fell 541 points to 3,998.40 and the S&P 500 retreated 6.12 to 1,775.50. Treasuries edged up 0.02 to 3.90 percent. in commodities, corn slipped 0.05 to 4.34, soybeans fell 20.25 to 13.23, wheat moved down 27 to 6.69, oil rose 0.06 to 97.50, gold dropped 32.30 to 1,224.90, silver declined 0.903 to 19,453, and platinum fell 20.80 to 1,364.40.
