Arlington honors CIA officer Spann as war dead buried
At Arlington National Cemetery CIA officer Johnny Micheal Spann was buried with full Marine honors as the only American killed by the enemy in Afghanistan. The service featured six Marines, a flag presentation, taps, and memorial remarks by CIA Director George Tenet. Spann, a former Marine artillery captain, was killed in Mazar-e-Sharif and is buried near Gen. Pershing’s grave, with his family attending. Other Afghanistan casualties, Green Berets, were remembered at Fort Campbell.
