Farm Hand Sought in Woman's Death Near Mulvane

An all night search ended at dawn when neighbors and Sedgwick County officers found the body of Mrs. Arthur Utterback, 83, near her farm three miles east of Mulvane. She was strangled and struck on the head, with a rope about the throat. Sheriff Boone said a murder charge would be filed against Joe Cain, a farm laborer hired days earlier by her husband. Cain, from Neodesha, fled in a Buick sedan bearing plates 2-13401. Cain’s description matches a man who appeared upset Wednesday. Police recovered the car, whose license plates remained, and a shriveled license found in the car. Cain’s whereabouts and identity are being pursued across the tri-state area.

Driver Dies of Burns in Missouri Truck Collision

Charles Dowler 38 died from burns after his gasoline truck was struck by a Frisco passenger train at Liberal Missouri last night. The truck exploded scattering flaming liquid.
