City criticizes railroad over campers eviction in winter

City officials condemn BNSF for clearing a homeless camp east of Lawrence near Eighth and Delaware streets after notices gave campers three days to leave by Sunday. About 28 people remained Monday in a wooded area near Hobbs Park, many with belongings moved from the Amtrak-adjacent site earlier. The railroad announced plans to close the camp months earlier, with city confirmation in mid November.

Downtown parking rules face wholesale changes in city plan

Lawrence commissioners will consider a broad overhaul of the Downtown parking enforcement system. The plan shifts from a criminal process to an administrative one, extends the contest window to 21 days, allows up to three online appeals, and adds more reminder notices to improve customer service. Parking manager Brad Harrell says changes aim for fairness and a better parking experience.

Slain Eudora woman remembered by former pastor

Nicole Felice Eaton, 44, of Eudora, died in an apparent suicide last week. The former Lawrence pastor Ross Baker, now in Emporia, describes Eaton as a church helper who loved family, animals, and singing in the Eudora United Methodist Church praise band. He recalls her lifting worship during the COVID pandemic and her mission to serve the community with a big heart and laughter amid hardship.
