Frigid weather strains town as wreckers cope with ice
Widespread snow and subfreezing conditions kept tow trucks busy across the area. Alec Drown of Hillcrest Wrecker said operations ran nonstop from noon to midnight Tuesday and then again at dawn Wednesday as drivers faced dead batteries and slide offs including a vehicle down a ravine near Inverness and Heritage drives. Lawrence police logged 18 nonmajor accidents from 6 p.m. Tuesday to 11 a.m. Wednesday. KU buses ran 30 to 40 minutes late while students shivered through the cold. Highs may reach 22 degrees with little warming into Friday afternoon.
