Deputy Education Commissioner Dale Dennis says several districts including Ashland Hugoton Buhler Wellington Skyline Hays and Haven struggle to meet payroll due to a $301.5 million cut in state funding this year and delayed payments. He estimates about $2.2 million is needed to pay staff as districts face cash flow crises and potential violations of the cash basis law.
Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department ends at 435 restaurants and terminates its $90,000 contract with the Kansas Department of Agriculture. Beginning Jan 9, KDA will assume restaurant inspections in Douglas Geary Reno Riley and Saline counties along with grocery stores and food processors. The five county contracts total about $245,000.
Online video report highlights rising demand for holiday assistance in Douglas County. The Ballard Center Holiday Bureau received 600 adoption requests, nearly double last year, with about 250 families needing help two weeks before Christmas. The Tree of Stars program partners with Sunflower Broadband and lists local business locations. Donors can pick items off paper stars and drop them at 708 Elm St. in North Lawrence. The Salvation Army in Lawrence has 25 families left in its adoption drive and aims to aid about 450 families after gifts and Red Kettle donations.
