Study Finds Most U.S. Silent Films Lost
A Library of Congress survey shows about 70 percent of American silent feature films from 1912 to 1930 are lost, with only 14 percent surviving in original form and 11 percent in foreign or degraded prints. MGM preserves most, Paramount has few survivors, while nitrate stock and neglect fueled the losses.
