A 1960s retrospective notes the era’s momentous events from space milestones to civil rights marches and Vietnam. It warns of continued conflict but outlines hopes for ending the Vietnam War, stabilizing the Middle East, education funding, and cleaner government as the nation enters the 1970s.
In Kansas City four Black Panthers clashed with eight police officers outside Police Chief C M Kelley s office as they attempted to attend a news conference Kelley had barred. The four men Peter O Neal Tommy Robinson Edward Rollins and John Jacobs were charged with interfering with police and released on bonds of 100 each. Robinson required hospital treatment for head injuries including nine stitches and a possible skull fracture. Kelley denied any transfer of firearms to right wing groups and said no weapons were moved, while an attorney for Kansas City Life Insurance Co said no fraud occurred.
Thomas J. Gaughan pleaded guilty in Douglas County District Court to a misdemeanor destruction of property under $50 and received a one year suspended sentence. Co defendant Lawrence Green had prior charges dismissed. Green faces an unannounced Supreme Court appeal on related cases. Jerry L. Wilson and others faced multiple guilty pleas and fines in a day of district and municipal court action.
About 75 black students entered University Hall at Harvard in a six hour occupation led by the Organization for Black Unity. They won an agreement to hire black workers on 20 percent of Harvard construction projects and upgrade black painters' helpers to journeyman status. A joint Harvard OBA committee will monitor hiring. Dean Ernest May said disciplinary charges would be filed against the students for violating campus conduct rules.
Mrs. Cora Frances Brooks, 76, of 816 Conn died early today at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Rumsey Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery. She was born July 31, 1893 in Cowlitz County Washington and was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene. Survivors include three sons Aaron Lloyd Carl a daughter Lillian Brooks two brothers a sister and 12 grandchildren.
Robert Jackson Harmon 84 of 1215 Laura died Friday. Graveside services are at 10 a.m. Monday at Maple Grove Cemetery with Rev. Eawin Price officiating. Survived by son George Harmon Bakersfield Calif and sister Mrs Zellah G Blitzkie.
County health officer Dr. Dale Clinton said that while one or two rats may be seen, Lawrence does not have a rat problem. He noted winter shelters rodents and that rats nest in trash or old buildings, not grassy areas. A complaint from Mrs. Daniel Merriam cited rats near a vacant lot developed for apartments. Also, about 20 stolen mailboxes from Lawrence and Overbrook routes were recovered in Ottawa with most returned to owners.
L/Cpl Henry Edward Wilks 19 son of Mr and Mrs Chester A Wilks Sr 735 N Third wounded in action November 28 near Quang Nam Vietnam. A 1968 Lawrence High School graduate he received fragmentation wounds to the right arm and neck during a company search and clear mission. He has been in Vietnam since January 6 and has been awarded two Purple Hearts.
The tradition of lighting the Christmas tree is credited to Martin Luther, noted for introducing the custom as a symbolic celebration during the holiday season.
H Rap Brown addressed over 1,000 at Kansas University Hoch Auditorium urging black students to control programs and skills for community use. He warned against chasing diplomas and emphasized black studies as a means to empower, not an end, while criticizing white society and US policies. The conference of Black Students Unions continued with remarks on Agnew and civil rights.
Lawrence police report a 12 year old seventh grade student Jimmy Church was knocked down on a walkway near South Junior High School and had $3 stolen. An unidentified youth grabbed him after he refused to hand over money. a companion waited nearby. Principal Orvel Criqui said they doubt the assailants are students. Other reports list Roy W. Todd’s theft of a $35 portable saw and $125 in tools from his garage between 2 and 8 p.m. Friday.
North Vietnamese forces shot down a U S helicopter near Dak To in the central highlands. All 11 aboard died including a South Vietnamese full colonel and his American adviser. Crew, sergeant, two Vietnamese majors and two NCOs among the dead.
