In Budapest clashes between pro government and nationalist demonstrators left at least two dead and several wounded. Russians backed by armored cars and tanks guarded streets as workers struck in several factories and a 2 to 3 pm hour of silence was urged citywide.
Washington protested to Russia over Soviet military action against Hungarian civilians. A line of tanks reportedly blocked access to the U S legation in Budapest, preventing demonstrators from approaching. Robert Murphy urged that the denunciation be sent to Moscow immediately and Striganov promised to transmit it.
Vatican City Pope Pius XII named Archbishop William Godfrey of Liverpool as archbishop of Westminster. Godfrey is 67 and assumes leadership of the Roman Catholic Church in Great Britain.
Dozens of Hungarian children at Camp Kilmer New Jersey awoke to find St Nicholas gifts left by Red Cross volunteers. The small presents included dolls games and switches placed in their shoes as part of the Dec 6 tradition amid their refugee parents’ quarters.
United Nations delegates expressed shock after Hungary led by Premier Janos Kadar refused to admit Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold. MARION Kansas a diesel engine crashed into a distillate loaded tank car in a switching accident. One trainman was killed and four others injured as fire destroyed about six freight cars near Aule four miles south of Marion. The brakeman Lawrence Martin 44 died after jumping from the blaze. Conductor Charles Totten 64 and brakeman Keith Longabaugh 30 were admitted to St Luke’s Hospital Marion with injuries. Engineer Harrison Metz 67 was hospitalized at Herington. The crew all from Herington were in shock with multiple injuries including shoulder rib facial burns and smoke inhalation. The crash occurred during switching at 6 50 a m.
London reports state that R A Butler told the House Eden will be handed back to the prime minister on return from Jamaica. A confidence vote looms as papers split on Eden's future amid Suez controversy. No. 10 Downing Street says Eden will return December 14 from Jamaica.
U S school enrollment from kindergarten to college rose to 39 353 000 this fall according to the Census Bureau. The total reflects public private and church schools and colleges for persons 5 to 34 years old and covers October comparisons.

The Kansas University Athletic Board recommended re hiring head football coach Chuck Mather for 1957 with a salary increase. He would become the highest paid KU coach, with rumors placing pay around 11 000 dollars. The decision moves to the Board of Regents for approval as Mather praised the board and noted progress and plans for 1957.
Washington report says European allies brushed aside Dulles proposed NATO supercouncil as a method to unify the alliance. The three member committee’s straight report on NATO reforms will be reviewed at the Paris foreign ministers meeting, while talks may consider 12 month military plans and troop adjustments amid Cold War tensions.
Douglas County voters will decide next Tuesday in a national corn referendum announced by the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee. Polls open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at nine township locations. Eligible voters include those who grew corn in 1956, landlords with corn interests, and participants in the soil bank. Key issue: adopt a three year base acreage plan or keep the current acreage allotments. The base plan could allow more corn with price supports but may lower overall support rates.
