Legislature’s 1868 Electors Show Florida’s Historic Role
Democrats accuse the GOP led Florida Legislature of selecting its own electors to back the Republican ticket. In 1868 the legislature met in August and again in November to name three electors, including one Black senator, James Green of Manatee, John Butler of Santa Rosa, and Robert Meacham of Jefferson. Grant won the Electoral College 214 to 80 as Florida avoided a new popular vote.
