Oldest Lawrence home holds 1855 pioneer story
Attorney and KU associate professor Mary Clark preserves the 1855 Savage house now at 23rd and Iowa behind Hobby Lobby. Savage built the original 17 by 25 foot dwelling, faced tragedy with family deaths, contributed to Lawrence science circles, and possibly inspired the Rock Chalk chant. The stone addition from the 1860s or 1870s stands as a testament to stubborn resolve. Clark adds the home to the Lawrence Register of Historic Places, continuing her ongoing research.
