North Carolina 65 carat emerald gem unearthed on farm
A nearly 65 carat emerald found at a North Carolina farm drew comparisons to Catherine the Great’s crown jewels. Discovered in a pit near corn rows, the gem was nicknamed Carolina Emperor by its finders who once charged visitors to shovel for samples. After cutting, the finished stone weighed about one fifth of the original, roughly larger than a US quarter and similar to a AA battery in heft, with experts noting its size and quality comparable to a diamond brooch once sold by Christies for 1.65 million dollars.
