Memorial for disabled veterans approved near Capitol

The National Capital Memorial Commission approved a memorial for 2.3 million disabled veterans to be placed about two blocks west of the Capitol opposite the U.S. Botanic Garden. Lois Pope began lobbying in 1996 after serving veterans in New York during the Vietnam era, calling war costs stark. FDA said a lab error led to an incorrect contamination determination for Sargento shredded cheese, prompting a voluntary recall due to possible Listeria.

GOP Turns Out More Voters In 2000 Election

A nonpartisan study finds Republicans mobilized more voters than Democrats in the 2000 presidential election. Voter turnout rose to 51.2 percent of the voting age population, about 105.4 million people, up 2.2 points from 1996, with Republicans increasing turnout in every state and D C. Democrats grew turnout in 29 states but fell in 21. Democratic shares suggest roughly a third of the electorate for Democrats and a quarter for Republicans.

Mother and five children slain in Sioux City home

A mother and five children aged 5 to 12 were found slain Thursday night in their Sioux City residence by a babysitter. Police said bodies likely lay in the home for several days and that the wounds were not considered to be safety related. No other details were provided.
