The sole remaining government link, the New York Chicago run, will be taken over by the national ash transport corporation. Lyons Lyons Aug. 81 (AT) Remains of Indian villages in Rice county are linked to the Quiveran settlement visited by Coronado in 1541. State archaeologist Mark E. Zimmerman says his view of sites strengthens narratives of the Spanish conquistador and pins a terminal point of Coronado’s expedition between Lyons and Lindsborg Kansas. Zimmerman estimates a former 25,000 population in the county now near 15,000 and notes artifacts show skilled flint, pottery, bone and shell work, tanning, and farming. He and assistants probe a complete lodge site. Valley Falls fair opens with good weather and fast pace. A Santa Rosa church built from redwood timber uses only two-thirds of the tree despite all parts supplying materials.

Tractor overturns injuring local worker and basketball captain
Carl Graaber, of 835 Massachusetts Street, was critically hurt when the tractor he was grading at Twenty second and Kentucky streets overturned after hitting a ditch. He suffered a dislocated hip, pelvic fracture, crushed hands, broken wrist, and scalds. Graaber, a Penny and Baldwin paying contractor, was recovering at Lawrence Memorial Hospital where his dislocated hip was replaced. A Liberty Memorial high school graduate and former basketball captain, he planned to enroll at the university next semester.
