In South Vietnam, Thieu supporters led in the new lower house early returns, with 58 of 140 counted seats for Thieu, 32 for the opposition, and 3 independents. Most unknowns were from the Mekong Delta, while opposition fared better in Saigon and northern provinces. The vote saw heavy Viet Cong activity but little disruption, and Thieu aimed to press on with the October 3 presidential election as the sole candidate.
