Lecompton Rt. 1 home of Mr and Mrs Raymond Sumner was gutted by fire Friday afternoon with defective wiring suspected. Fire Chief Herb Roberts said the call came at 4 30 p m neighbors aided six firemen who saved the structure but not the interior or contents. Virginia Sumner was home but uninjured.

Fire crews reported no damage after two trash fires were put out on Friday. At 4:39 p.m. firefighters responded to Lawrence Paper Co. on North Lakeview Rd where a cigarette reportedly ignited papers. A second trash fire was extinguished at 11:10 p.m. at the Merrill Stanford home 1925 Ky.

Fighter Strikes DMZ as B52s Hit South Edge
The USS Command says an American F4 Phantom struck inside the northern DMZ for the first time in two months, destroying a 37MM gun with no plane damage. B52s bombed suspected targets in the southern DMZ as North Vietnamese gunners shelled Fire Base Fuller, with 200 rockets landing outside the base. A light helicopter was shot down northeast of Saigon, two Americans injured, and fighting near Da Nang wounded one American and destroyed a Sheridan tank.

Church Board Backs Hospital Abortion Rule

Accidents Reported In Lawrence Friday Through Saturday
Lawrence police investigated at least 14 vehicular collisions Friday into Saturday with two people treated and released at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Mildred Green was treated after a two vehicle crash at West 23rd and Vermont. She was a passenger in Hazel Simmons car. Damages were listed at 650 and 500 dollars. Jerry Burwell and Randall Supernaw were involved in a crash at 14th and Tennessee with damages of 220 and 320 dollars.
