Advices from the Cherokee Nation report Bushyhead and Adair elected as principal chiefs with Thompson and H defeated four to one. The Ross party suffers a final, complete defeat. Bushyhead and Adair, educated and progressive, favor liberal laws and economical administration and oppose a large Washington delegation.
Memphis reports three new cases and six deaths as the disease spreads. Gen Hood and his ten year old daughter Libbie Hood are ill in New Orleans. Twenty two total Memphis cases include ten white and twelve colored. four more deaths. Nurses assigned by the Howard Association. Governor urged aid for Memphis. Galveston declares quarantine against the city due to the steamer Colorado entering port. The Governor may intervene.
San Francisco reports say Kalloch remains in favorable condition with no new inflammation feared. A workingmen’s meeting focused on campaign issues and adjourned with attendees dispersing promptly. In Cincinnati Gen. Ewing spoke at Cambridge veterans’ reunion on state rights and secession, calling it settled and criticizing both South extremism and Northern overreach. A grand parade followed and a reception was held.
The Commercial Indicator prints upcoming reports from 58 Kansas counties and others in Nebraska Missouri and Iowa on corn acreage and yields and on hog marketing for September and October. It notes generally larger corn acreage with excellent prospects though some Kansas and western Missouri areas report drought damage. Hog marketing is expected to be lower than last year while hogs remain in healthy condition.
Washington specials report that the government offers a heavy commission on recovered Confederate States property in Europe. Speculators travel to Europe seeking to earn government rewards, while prior efforts by Secretaries of the Treasury through civil process failed.

Cincinnati Aug. 27 Secretary Sherman speaking after Vice President Cunningham argued that extending the withdrawal period for four percent bond proceeds prevented disruption to the money market. He defended Treasury actions to facilitate exchange of four percent bonds into five and six percent bonds and to close loan accounts by Sept 15 without hurting business.
From St Louis reports a cautious Republican outlook across California drafts fear of losing several congressional seats due to new party alignments. Iowa Republicans push for Kirkwood as a presidential candidate while Dorsey promotes a Grant revival in Arkansas. Senate news notes Conkling's convention delegate status and a mixed wheat crop outlook across the Northwest with rising acreage and yields. A pair of homicides near Walpole, including Pemberton and Roberts, ends with the claim of political conflict tied to a suit in Gallatin.
London reports the death of Sir Rowland Hill at 4 3 morning aged eighty four. The Oldham spinners urge emigration if wage cuts persist and call for production limits to aid trade. Isonomy wins the great Ebor handicap. The Masters warn of needed measures to ease low trade mood. Helvetia carries eighty farmers to Texas amid English agricultural gloom. General Grant has left Yokohama for Kamakura after visiting Tokio where the Mikado consulted him on international and domestic policy. He praises public confidence, plans further formal visits, and will sail for America with a new eastern protection society in view. Cholera remains virulent with 45,000 cases and 25,000 deaths recorded.
A French Colony report notes that French Catholics and Royalists fearing the Ferry bill intend to form a Catholic colony on Papua. The expedition, previously announced to sail from Flushing under the American flag, was reported from London in August.
