Smithsonian Panda Cubs Death Deepens Zoo Mystery
One of the National Zoo's giant panda cubs died Wednesday around 2 p.m. Officials said the surviving cub, strong and normal, remains with mother Mei Xiang in Washington. Mei Xiang gave birth to twins after artificial insemination in April and a rotating schedule had planned each cub time with the mother. Zoo staff had planned four hour intervals for nursing and interaction, but reported delays in swapping since Monday afternoon. The smaller cub remained high risk though behaviors were reportedly good.

Erika Bears Down On Caribbean Then Florida Threatens To Strengthen
Erika, a tropical storm moving west at 17 mph, is forecast to approach Florida by Monday possibly becoming a hurricane. It could become the first hurricane to hit Florida since October 2005.
