Report covers two waves of German bombers over Portsmouth and London with casualties and destruction. British anti-aircraft fire repelled raids, while fighter pilots claimed several enemy aircraft. Ramsgate and Dover also faced bombardment as observers noted dogfights over the capital.
Fire destroyed the huge California building of the Golden Gate exposition on Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay. A brisk wind prevented spread to other structures as the Army, Treasure Island Co, police and guards reportedly removed art works and valuable items from the frame and plaster hall. The building housed paintings by California artists relics from San Francisco’s early days and several executive offices.
A recruiting sergeant in Savannah Georgia announced stenographers were needed for the army. Women rallied to the office to apply but the sergeant later said vacancies would be filled by men stenographers only.

President Roosevelt accepted Harry L. Hopkins’s resignation from the commerce post to recover his health. Hopkins plans to become Hyde Park library librarian. Jesse H. Jones may be offered the vacancy. Louis Johnson under consideration for undersecretary. Edward J. Noble previously resigned.
The air ministry announced that Royal Air Force bombers carried out numerous daylight harrassing raids and night attacks on airfields and other military targets in Nazi occupied France the Low Countries and Germany.
Secretary Hull told reporters the United States remains strictly against seizure and censorship of mails by Britain in Bermuda. He denied taking any initiative on reports of plans to erase Britain’s wartime debt in exchange for naval and air bases, and he declined to comment on Far East notes or talks with Australia.
German forces shelled the southeast coast of England for a second time that day. A high flying German plane acted as spotter for evening bombardment near Dover while another did so in the morning. Anti aircraft guns repelled the spotter but it persisted. British counter barrages answered from the English side of the channel.
Senate records publish Ambassador Bullitt denial that he promised France the United States would enter the European war. He disputes sister Genevieve Clark Thomson's newspaper account and says no letter ever stated US entry if France went to war. Clark forwarded Bullitt’s letter and Thomson’s explanation to lawmakers.
Washington Aug 24 the senate agreed to cap debate on an amendment to the Burke Wadsworth compulsory military training bill at fifteen minutes per senator seeking to speak. Senator Barkley said private talks failed to secure universal agreement to shorten debate while Gibson urged swift action citing Nazi studies and urging immediate consideration.

London reports Manston airfield suffered considerable damage from today’s raids by German bombers. In Britain 32 enemy planes were destroyed by 7 p.m. with 12 more reported missing. The Arctic Trapper shot down two bombers and damaged two, with no casualties after routine escort combat.
Republican and Democratic leaders in Topeka finalize plans for county council meetings on Tuesday. Keynote speakers include Dudley Doolittle for Democrats and F. L. Hagaman for Republicans. Committee leadership and temporary chairmen are being decided as party candidates target November voters.
Ernest Pontius will join the Journal-World staff as advertising manager around September 15, replacing R A deWatteville who moves to the Topeka State Journal. Pontius comes from WEN where he has been commercial manager for radio advertising and he is a Lawrence native with strong community ties.

Official canvassing board results show Kansas total August primary votes at 372,022 with Republicans over Democratic 2 to 1. Key outputs include Gov. Payne Ratner's renomination, W. Burke and S. L. Mathews as Democrats, I.S. Woodward over W.G. Fink for lieutenant governor, and several state office totals across multiple parties.
