Eagle Stay as National Emblem Amid Turkey Feud
Washington August 24 The Bureau of Biological Survey rejected a proposal to replace the national emblem from the eagle to the turkey Colonel H P Sheldon notes broad support for the change but recalls Benjamin Franklin opposed the eagle in 1784 Franklin called the turkey a cowardly thief and retreating in battles He cites Franklin’s dislike of the eagle and Franklin’s turkey praise as a public misperception Sheldon argues the turkey lacks courage and runs from danger while a bill to consider the change may surface in the next Congress United States heritage and symbolism debate continues with supporters and opponents weighing tradition and merit
