Legion elects Stevens as commander at Dorsey-Liberty post
NEW LEGION HEAD R. B. Stevens, attorney and World War I navy veteran, was chosen commander of the Dorsey-Liberty post of the American Legion at last night's annual election. D. J. Richardson was elected vice commander with prior service in Company H, 137th Infantry, 35th Division. Other officers elected include I. W. Hartley as finance officer, Sam P. Moyer as chaplain, Arch Oliver as historian, L. R. Melvin as sergeant at arms, and Howard Moore and Frank Sullivan as executive committee members. Delegates to the state Legion convention to be held in Atchison September 6-7 include the new commander and adjutant (to be appointed later) along with L. R. Melvin and George Hedrick. The meeting also discussed questions to come before the department convention and a proposed increase in state dues to fund rehabilitation work for disabled veterans in Kansas. The local Legion post currently has 126 members.

Wanted for Murder Otto J. Brown Captured in Kansas City Chase
Otto J. Brown a 20 year old Kansas City man suspected in the fatal beating of Joe Rogers was moved from the county jail to Kansas City after detectives claimed six to seven witnesses would prove his guilt. Brown said he was with Rogers during the poker game and described two narcotics peddlers involved in the assault. He had previously been arrested about 15 times in Kansas City on petit larceny charges and said he served time at the city work farm.

Nine Rescued From Rain Fueled Creek Flood
Kansas City Aug 20 Nine people were rescued from Maltby creek two miles west of Walcott Kansas after a rain swollen creek threatened to sweep an interurban car into the Missouri river. A work crew used ladders from a damaged trestle to save seven men and two women. Motorman Fred Davis described a 25 foot plunge and the car lodging on the trestle as the rescue proceeded. One passenger was slightly injured and all were taken to Leavenworth by bus.
