City Commission Awards HUD Contracts for Water Improvements

The City Commission approved three contracts totaling 437345 for water and sewer work citywide. J E Sieben Construction Co Of Overland Park was low bidder on the HUD project at 158180 with Black and Veatch estimates guiding the figures. The panel also authorized sidewalk construction at a cul de sac despite local objections and moved to remove an unlawful sign encroaching public right of way.

New Ecuadorian Boy Begins School Exchange in Lawrence

Adoni Munoz, eight, from Santa Cecilia Ecuador, arrives in Lawrence for a new exchange program with KU zoology Prof. William Duellman and wife. He will attend Hillcrest School while living with the Duellmans and plans to return to Ecuador next summer. He speaks Spanish English and Quichua and has enjoyed American foods ice cream and games like Monopoly Life and chess.

Negro Hiring on Rise in Wichita Campaign

Wichita sponsors state 81 Negroes were hired this month through a joint effort led by the Chamber of Commerce Urban League and Community Action Program. The four agencies praised employers for expanding opportunities.

Police say two youths assaulted 17 year old Gary S. Allen of 503 N 3rd St late Tuesday night at Henry's Drive In. Investigation continues into the assault incident.

Bandit Robbery at Kansas City Airport Motel

Two men robbed the Municipal Air Terminal Holiday Inn at Kansas City with a sawed-off shotgun and a pistol, taking about $350. Apat Terry Ritchie, 20, a Fort Riley warrant officer, fired four shots at the fleeing bandits but failed to stop them. Patrons Phil D. Furlong, 36, and Edward Moran Jr., 35, both of Sioux City, Iowa, reported losses of about $25 each.

Watershed dam project slated to start in September

Initial work on the 340000 acre Wakarusa watershed near Eudora and Vinland will begin in September with a $20351 dam on the Little Wakarusa. The project aims to reduce flood risk and provide water in dry years, with 11.3 acre water surface and 35 foot height.

City clarifies ambulance service charges in contract dispute

City officials today clarified charges in the contract with Citizens Ambulance Service. Taxpayers pay 282 dollars a month or 3 384 dollars a year, contrary to a letter claiming 7 200 dollars annually. City Manager Ray Wells notes many Kansas cities pay more, and cites Olathe's 600 dollars monthly private service as a cheaper option. The contract avoids funding city ambulance operations from tax money.

Death of Dr Gregory Pincus Pioneer of the Pill

Dr Gregory Pincus, 64, co founder of the Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology, died Tuesday night in Boston. He helped develop the first practical oral contraceptive pill with Dr Hudson Hoagland and laboratory work began at the foundation in 1950. The pill was approved by the FDA for threatened abortion and menstrual disorders ten years after its creation and seven years as a prescription contraceptive.

Three in Detroit Held in Beatings

AP reports two Detroit policemen and a private guard charged with conspiring to beat abuse and intimidate during last months riots at the Algiers Motel incident where three Negro youths were killed. A third officer named as coconspirator but not a defendant. warrants list David Senec Robert Paille Melvin Dismukes and Ronald August. Paille and August face murder charges. August to stand trial, Paille freed for lack of evidence. Dismukes bound over for felonious assault.

Chemical Blast Hits Texarkana

Explosions and fire from derailment of four chemical cars forced evacuation of about 6 000 people within a 1 half mile area in Texarkana. Ten people were injured, seven firefighters and three Red Cross workers among them. Injuries were minor and victims were treated at a hospital, with evacuees housed in four schools and the Marine Corps Reserve Center.
