Boston dispatch reports Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti executed in the electric chair at Charlestown state prison after a seven year fight to halt their sentences. Madeiros followed minutes earlier. motions for reprieve failed. Deaths prompt ongoing burial plans and autopsies.
The Sacco and Vanzetti defense committee announced that the bodies will be placed in specially constructed caskets and lie in state at their Hanover street headquarters in Boston. Pickets were arrested during a protest in front of the state house as arrangements proceed, with mortality details and possible distribution of death masks discussed.
In Paris at Place D Alma police charged and dispersed a small crowd of Sacco Vanzetti demonstrators preparing to march to the American embassy. Several people were slightly injured as officers moved in to break up the gathering.
In a tense scene police and infantry lined streets near the American embassy as guards protected government buildings and residences in Washington. Some 100 guards were at the Capitol with riot guns as officials reported no disorder in the early hours. In Geneva, about 2,000 protesters gathered before the American consulate, and firemen drenched the crowd with water.
Mack Golliken and Dick Albverty of Copan Oklahoma were arrested near Bartlesville in connection with the Wayside State bank robbery at Wayside Kansas. Henry Wells is held in Montgomery County jail. Two men obtained $800 in the robbery.
The residuary estate of Elbert H Gary, chairman of United States Steel, is divided equally among his wife and two daughters. Died August 15 in New York City. value listed as more than 100 percent in personal property. The will dated October 24, 1925 creates two life income trust funds for his daughters, with remainder to their children, plus additional grandchild trusts of 890,000 each, and numerous educational and church trusts including the Gary Memorial church at Wheaton. Also funds for eight educational institutions and the Gary cemetery plots at Wheaton Illinois.
Ottawa Kansas August 23 AP robbers entered Pomona post office eight miles west of town and stole 76 dollars and money orders. Princeton post office in Franklin county was entered Saturday night but robbers fled without taking anything. No clues found to suspects.
Mostly fair conditions noted with clearer skies tonight and Wednesday. East portion cooler tonight with warming trend Wednesday afternoon. Roads vary with mud along most routes. Wichita and Pittsburg show clearer travel while rounded areas remain damp. County reports include slippery conditions in some stretches and light mist in others.
In Geneva a League of Nations watchdog, essential for budget upkeep, helped repel rioters during last night’s Sacco Vanzetti protests. Assailants damaged the glass room used for international conferences as two night watchmen and their Alsatian dog resisted intruders and halted a possible fire.
In north central and northeast Kansas heavy rains raise flood concerns. Smoky Hill at Salina likely rises by morning, Solomon at Beloit tops banks, and Cottonwood near Emporia expected to fall. Local totals include Smith Center 2.05 inches and Lawrence 2.0 inches. Meanwhile two men, Leghorn-chicken thieves, were arrested in a separate Kansas City-to-Topeka case with suspects Spiellers and Bob Knight linked to stolen poultry.
Reports from Beloit to Salina and Smoky Hill show Solomon and Smoky Hill rivers rising after heavy rainfall. Cities logged two to four inches of rain with several areas reaching near flood levels while other towns reported lighter totals and no immediate danger.
The Kinkajou was chosen as the new U S dance for 1927 28 by one thousand dancing masters in New York. The Dixie Stomp and Yankee Prance were also considered but did not win. Originator Mrs Edna Rothard Passapae of Newark described the dance as a fox trot like strut with side steps and pivots inspired by Ada May's Rio Rita routine.
Wells Campbell of Erie Kansas visited Lawrence and recalled his Lawrence roots. Born in Lawrence, he worked at the express office under T J Sweeney and as a Journal World collector. Now seven years in Erie, six on the city council, he may move back to Lawrence with a university bound son and a daughter soon ready to enter. John Moffett, 74, a renowned rancher and stockman, died in Kansas City. He helped run the Moffett Brothers Andrews Livestock for thirty years and owned ranches in Harper County Kansas and large tracts in Oklahoma and Missouri.
Assistant professor of English Miss Helen Rhoda Hoopes of the University writes the poem Young Men from China. It appears in the August 4 issue of Christian Century, noted alongside Atwater-Kent Radio by Hanna.
Jackman cautions that Solomon River flood waters near Beloit are unlikely to rise immediately despite 1 inch plus rain in nearby towns. Smoky Hill crest near Chapman is a week ahead, and unless heavy rains hit creeks, the river should remain steady as Topeka predicts falling levels. Local rainfall totals ranged from .96 to 1.21 inches in Junction City, Salina, Topeka, and Wamego.
In Lodi New Jersey on August 23 an infant named Roger Oliver, ten months old, drowned after his mother left a large bowl of hot soup on the kitchen floor. The mother returned within minutes to find the child submerged in the soup. County Physician William E Ogden attributed death to drowning. A separate divorce suit was filed in district court by Bertha Griffin against Hubert Gaeta.
Wilbur Munson Cassaday a Kansas farmer sues National Air Transport Inc for 10512.15 dollars in Sedgwick County District Court claiming an airmail plane flew low over his farm on September 1 1926 and frightened his horses causing a runaway that injured him.
Principal's office oversees pre enrollment work as transportation is arranged for late starters and old students are assigned to quarters. Aug 31 return for those on leave, new students arrive Sept 1 to 6, many returning. Applications flow to Mr Peters. space may be limited. Superintendent Blair back from Colorado. Johnson returns from western trip. several new teachers to be assigned from civil service or other Indian schools. Rosters pending release.
The Department of Agriculture warned that with normal seeding conditions and average or better yields in key producing countries the 1928 world wheat market may be less favorable for American exports. It projects American wheat staying on a world market basis, with carryover similar to this season and expanding wheat areas in the U S Canada Argentina and Australia.
Washington Aug 23 AP An early meeting of the contest committee of the National Aeronautic association to consider steps to discourage long distance stunt flights is planned by Porter Adams president who returned from New England. Adams says the committee can prevent recurrence of Dole prize accidents by refusing to sanction any event lacking aviation advancement commensurate with the risk involved. Admiral Eberle acting secretary of the navy predicts congress will forbid stunt flights and believes long over water flights should be by seaplanes or amphibians.
Fifty Lawrence Boy Scouts from all local troops depart at 6 a m for Camp Oka-Sita on the James River near Galena Missouri, traveling by truck and car. They will stay in Joplin overnight and return September 3 after meals at Colony. Camp director Ralph D Childs announces the Choctaw name meaning water's edge and lists staff including Lester B Miller and Louis R Perry.
Douglas County Old Settlers Association met to arrange the annual reunion set for September 14 at G A R hall in the county courthouse. Officers appointed committees for publicity dinner speaker and music with L D Howard presiding. Henry Albach E F Abels and W C Simons named to publicity. Mrs Huddleston chair of dinner. J Churchill to secure music.
North Carolina Lindstrom and M E Lindstrom take charge of Advance Cleaners after pur chase from Variel C Lindstrom of Kansas City Missouri The new owners are tied to Acme Cleaning Company of Kansas City and Lindstrom a 1925 University of Illinois graduate Warfel the former owner has moved to Ohio.
An inch and a half of rain fell at Camp Whitside in Kansas last night but did not dampen the 69th infantry brigade or its equipment. Wooden tent floors kept water out and the training schedule resumed this morning amid wet grounds but steady plans. Also in Mississippi, observers split on the gubernatorial run off with Bilbo predicted to win by a safe margin. In Seattle, Col. P M Hoisington of Newton, Kansas, ill with typhus remains in critical condition but is expected to recover.
Miss Ruth Elders and George Haldeman, Lakeland residents, departed at 7:40 a.m. today in a two seater acoair plane bound for Detroit. They will test a Stinson monoplane in preparation for a planned nonstop New York to Paris flight.

The twenty seventh annual Fu Dora C P A picnic will be held August 31 at City park Fu Dora. Rev Edward Hislop of First Methodist Episcopal Church Lawrence will speak. Kansan Industrial school provides entertainment with band concerts boxing wrestling stunts and rides. Cash prizes in many contests include cow calling obstacle race old soldiers hag calling chicken calling prettiest boy baby prettiest girl baby fat man race fat lad race nail driving horseshoe pitching foot races and sack races.
At the Lawrence Fliers club meeting in the chamber rooms the feasibility of a landing field at the Hird corner north of Lawrence was discussed. A report will go to the aeronautics commission of the chamber of commerce with updates on two other fields south of town. Twelve members attended.
Troop C of Haskell Kansas National Guard, part of the 114th Cavalry Regiment, bore the state flag at General Wood's memorial services last Sunday. John H Parker delivered several packages of magazines and papers to the Lawrence until Sunday, with reading material donated by Wolf Shaff.
Rain and police action halted a radical parade planned near the American embassy in Paris. Demonstrators gathered at Place D Alma but attempt to form a marching lineup failed as heavy rain dampened the event. French guards reinforced with Republican units stood by.

W W Curfman longtime Lincoln assistant superintendent of schools was named superintendent of Lawrence city schools to replace H P Smith. The board authorized a contract and welcomed Curfman and his family. He will assume duties before the September 12 term start and is about 40, with a career as a teacher, principal, and administrator in Kansas and Oklahoma.
Judges counted a third week of balloting finding 10 070 650 votes added to the tally bringing three week total to 20 405 900. Aimee Piper leads with Helen Harschberger in second as votes exceed prior weeks in the Buy in Lawrence popularity contest.
In Madill Oklahoma on August 23 AP reports Charles Ross a Tulsa resident aged 41 and Joe Leonard a 39 year old Kansas City man were each sentenced to twenty five years in the state penitentiary after pleading guilty to yesterday's robbery of the First National Bank of Kingston Sheriff Ed Long who captured them yesterday within an hour of the robbery escorted them to the penitentiary within thirty minutes of sentencing.
Citizens National Bank of Fort Scott will consolidate with the Devon State Bank of Devon tomorrow. Fort Scott will assume all liabilities and take over Devon’s assets. The Citizens National Bank reports assets over 100000 dollars and deposits above two million. C D Sample is president and T M Givens cashier. Charlie Hembree of Fort Scott faces first degree murder charges for the slaying of Albert Cloyd, with coroner’s verdict of murder with felonious intent. Hembree bound over to November district court and refuses to plead guilty.
