KU housing officials report the dormitory situation steady as students return, with tripling rooms to accommodate demand. J J Wilson notes only as needed expansion, with 125 rooms already converted and more potential if required.
Lawrence city commissioners will tackle mostly technical matters at a 7 p.m. Tuesday session on the Fourth Floor of the First National Bank Tower. Items include parking lot changes for Lawrence Toyota, Trailridge Apartment access, a proposed bowling alley at 33rd and Iowa, and a revised Ryan Transport site plan. A sand dredging permit near the Massachusetts Street bridge is favored with restrictions. An East Lawrence rezoning of 13.9 acres from research industrial to residential uses is also on the noon special meeting agenda.
A 36 year old De Soto woman Yvonne Cawkley was killed when a car struck her as she walked along the old K 10 highway near Peoria Street at about 3 15 a m Sunday. John M Mathes III 20 Overland Park driving the car, no charges expected. Funeral home in Shawnee arranging shipment to Mount Vernon Washington for services and burial. She is survived by her mother a brother and children.
Two of five Lawrence youths detained early Sunday for curfew violation will appear at hearings this week in Douglas County District Court. Both have prior police contact. one also allegedly possessed marijuana. Three others will receive probation counseling. Curfew runs 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sundays to Thursdays and 12:30 a.m. to 6 a.m. weekends.
In Lawrence, two Democratic candidates John Carlin and Bert Chaney spoke at a Douglas County Kansas University Young Democrat picnic about a year before the primary. Party workers plan more visits as Chaney vows to win with broad organization and no big money.
The U S Commission on Civil Rights and its Kansas Advisory Committee will sponsor a conference in Topeka on September 29 30 focusing on civil rights and Kansas prison concerns. Workshops will cover medical services affirmative action minority and women concerns and site selection criteria for new prisons.
Rhodesian security forces hunted a guerrilla group after a raid on a farm near Umtali, killing 16 civilians including a pregnant woman. Separately, rockets fired from Zambia hit Kariba, causing no injuries. The attacks come amid a five year war against Ian Smith's government.
The Journal-World reports District 497 will not provide bus transportation for senior high students in North Lawrence. Steve Kalmes, transportation director, states federal funds required for an exception are not available.
Washington AP reports the Carter administration seeks ratification of Panama Canal treaties amid a threatened Senate filibuster led by Jesse Helms and Strom Thurmond. ACU launches a $50,000 campaign to block the pact as polls show 17 senators in favor, 17 opposed, and 62 undecided.
Kansas University announces fall enrollment runs Tuesday through Friday with 8 30 a m to 5 p m hours Tuesday and 7 a m to 2 p m Wednesday and Thursday and 7 a m to 1 15 p m Friday. Registration includes form submission, ID card, and parking permit fees. Enrollment times target seniors on Wednesday morning and undergraduates on Wednesday afternoon through Friday noon, with graduates and law students free to enroll anytime. Easy Access course enrollment Sunday 2 30 p m to 3 30 p m Level 5 Kansas Union. A record 336 Easy Access courses are offered this year. Classes begin August 29.
