Lawrence Rotary Club heard Prof. Russell Mesler describe KU's new 10 kilowatt nuclear reactor. He outlined operation funding totaling about 620000 from state federal and private sources, shielding devices, safety, and research aims including lighter shielding and submarine hulls for maneuverability.
Kansas AP report says two escapees from Osawatomie state hospital were captured after beating and robbing a man. William Harland, 22, of Kansas City and William C Loftus, Topeka, fled Sunday and forced James S Watson, 27, to drive them to Kansas City where they carjacked him. Police found the stolen car stalled with Harland pushing it.
Two groups seeking a major league baseball club invited Kansas City Athletics owner Charles Finley to view potential in the Arlington area between Fort Worth and Dallas. Finley, owner of the Athletics, cited dissatisfaction with coverage and treatment in Kansas City.
About 150 youngsters and 75 adults took part in the second annual Kids Day, sponsored by VFW Post 852 and the VFW Auxiliary. Ages 4 to 15 competed in multiple events, with Mitzi Elliot and John Hughes crowned king and queen. A buffet supper and entertainment concluded the day.
Opposition from two neighborhoods cites traffic noise and property value concerns as nurseries would shift zoning to A for single family areas. The board will study amendments to include nursery uses, seeking an equitable solution while noting no current nursery definition in ordinances.

Lawrence American Legion Post schedules a Saturday cleanup and fix up day at Municipal Ball Park at 1th and Del Streets. Members report at 8 a.m. bringing hammers saws and shovels. Alan Fisher notes turnout will determine work performed and urges a strong turnout for park renovation.
Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson briefed Democratic congressional leaders at the White House after a 36 hour trip to West Berlin. He described reinforced Western alliances and U.S. resolve in West Berlin while 1 500 American troops arrived to bolster the garrison. Kennedy praised the voyage as remarkably successful and important.
In New York the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld an 80 day Taft-Hartley injunction against renewing a maritime strike before September 21. The ruling agrees with a district court finding that a pre injunction walkout endangered health and welfare of the nation.
Lawrence police logged two vandalism reports over the weekend. Vernell Courtney reported white paint sprayed on the left side of a 1958 car at 1206 Tennessee Street. Harold Garrett, Memorial Park Cemetery manager, said bronze markers were unscrewed from cemetery standards sometime during the weekend.
David V. Noe, chairman of the County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee, announces relaxed 1961 price support rules. Light weight wheat up to 40 44 pounds per bushel will be eligible at discounts, and oats graded as badly stained or weathered (No. 4) will receive a seven cent per bushel discount from the basic rate, with existing No. 5 and test weight adjustments also applying. Douglas County support remains 65 cents per bushel.
The House passed a measure by 373 to 5 to prescribe the death penalty upon jury recommendation when hijacking involved force or threat on aircraft. The bill also carries 20 year prison terms for crew assaults and fines for false hijack threats plus penalties for concealed weapons aboard planes.
A diplomat warned Congo and Berlin crises spotlight Cold War tensions. He cited Soviet grain aid versus Congo flour shortages and warned of Soviet influence through army and police. He urged United Nations neutrality and US restraint while stressing readiness for prolonged conflict and miscalculation risks.
One hundred high school students from Kansas and surrounding states will attend a four day National Safety Conference at Kansas University. The event is sponsored by the National Commission on Safety Education, affiliate of the National Education Association. Social events include a dance at Potter's Lake pavilion and a picnic in Marvin Grove. Housing and sessions occur in Gertrude Sellards Pearson Hall.
Ambassador Adlai Stevenson accused the Soviet Union of suppressing freedoms at a U N General Assembly session. He contrasted Soviet behavior with France, spoke during debate on Tunisia and the Bizerte base, and noted U S abstention on a resolution demanding French withdrawal.

An explosion damaged the Gas Service Co. office in downtown Topeka injuring three people walking by. An open 2 inch gas line was found in the basement rear. The Blair duo, Ernest and Mrs., and their daughter Sherry, suffered injuries from flying glass.
English police dispersed marauding white gangs after race violence flared Monday night in Middlesbrough. Eleven arrests were made including two women. Three rioters were injured and two officers were struck by flying bottles.
Zoning will be discussed at an 8 p.m. public meeting Friday at the 4 H Fair grounds Building No. 2 in Wakarusa Township. The July 19 appointed committee will present six minute statements pro and con. Westorwood the county attorney will attend with county commissioners invited.
Jomo Kenyatta and Kenya governor Sir Patrick Renison met in Nairobi for the first time since Kenyatta's confinement ended. A joint statement cited discussions on national affairs constitutional progress and security. Kenyatta is backed by African nationalists for prime minister as Kenya moves toward independence. A Paris note recalls the "green hour" the 1900s pre dinner period from five to seven.
