Downtown Lawrence faces vacancy gaps and rebirth hopes
City business leaders discuss downtown vacancy highs since memory, the impact of the Great Recession, and a budding comeback. Treanor Architects moves downtown boosting about 70 jobs. Ninth and New Hampshire project draws praise but raises concerns about traffic and access. Paley fears rent cuts and shifting balance of retail, while Legends development diverts customers. Officials debate gathering spaces on Eighth Street and closing streets to boost nightlife and foot traffic. National retailers fear downtown fragility, and longer hours are urged to lure shoppers back downtown.
