Unprecedented Winter Travel Fares Extended to Pacific Coast
Chicago Aug 20 Unprecedented extensions of excursion fares for winter travel to and from the Pacific coast were announced by Hugh W Siddall chairman of the Trans Continental and Western Passenger associations. Beginning October 1 first class tickets at two cents a mile with a 30 day return may be bought until May 14 next year. Tourist sleepers at 1 8 cents per mile and coach at 1 35 cents per mile have a final May 14 purchase date with a six months return. These low fares cover all three classes and run through winter into spring 1937. The western railroads fear the sleeper surcharge elimination but the public responded with traffic up 50 percent after a prior experiment. Detroit Aug 20 Two fire trucks collided while responding to an alarm injuring two firemen and wrecking the apparatus. Both men were thrown 20 feet from the ladder truck.
