Washington reports the State Department is pressing to rescue an American identified as J. C. Ambler among 33 staff members of a British mining firm held by government forces at the Huelva mines near Huelva, Spain. Acting Secretary William Phillips via the Seville consulate directs strong representations for Ambler’s safety. A group of American tourists evacuated from Granada reached Seville and then Cadiz, boarding the battleship Oklahoma bound for Gibraltar.

Two fatalities were reported after blasts damaged two residences, trucks, and fuel tanks near Beggs and Seminole Oklahoma. William Rockne 19 son of Knute Rockne was declared insane by County Judge Win G Enoch at a psychopathic hospital hearing. He will be sent to the state hospital for the insane at Elgin Illinois for dementia praecox. Dr Francis G Gerty testified he has been under observation since last Friday. Knute Rockne, Notre Dame athletic director, died in 1931 in a plane crash.
The index showing the average of 60 stocks rose to 67.9 yesterday up from 68.9, indicating a minor gain in the market. Traders watched small-cap and financials for direction as investors weighed early earnings and global signals.
Two highway crashes near Lawrence last night killed Jean Lowry and injured three others, with Milo Lowry and Josephine Miller among the wounded. A second crash east of Mud Creek bridge hurt Carl Bucheim, while cattle in the wrecked truck remained unharmed. District Judge Hugh Means postponed a decision on Tuesday after hearing arguments about an ordinance barring oil transport trucks from city streets. A temporary restraining order had blocked enforcement, with City Attorney James Dye claiming public safety authority and trucking firms arguing the measure bans transport rather than regulates it.
