Dozens of Civil War re-enactors gather at Wilson's Creek National Battlefield in Republic Missouri as Alan Van Loenen of Lawrence leads an artillery crew preparing to fire a final cannon blast toward Confederate infantry. Soldiers who were pretending dead rose in the cornfield prompting the crew to shout Get back down and warn others to stay hidden from the blast. The scene featured members of the 3rd Kansas Battery B and their dramatic wartime reenactment.
Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Missouri plans to return to federal court to compel immediate release of federal family planning funds. CEO Peter Brownlie says no funds have been received since Judge Marten’s August order blocking a Kansas budget provision. The state appeals, arguing against the ruling while clinic services and low income patient access would be affected if funds remain withheld.
The Lawrence school district is hiring more teachers to shrink the largest elementary classes, with priority on kindergarten through third grade. As of Thursday, nine of 14 elementary schools received new staff, aiming to cap K-3 enrollments at 26 or 27 students, with Sunflower School near the threshold. Deena Burnett of the Lawrence Education Association said small classes allow teachers to reach each child individually and praised the concessions to reduce crowding.
The Lawrence school district reports per grade class averages with ranges and identifies schools with the largest and smallest classes. Kindergarten averages are 20 with 16 at Kennedy and New York to 24 at Schwegler. first 19.5 from 15 at New York to 25 at Cordley. second 21.3 from 17 at New York and Prairie Park to 27 at Sunflower. third 20.7 from 17 at Prairie Park to 26 at Sunset Hill. fourth 24.4 from 17 at Pinckney to 30 at Sunflower. fifth 24.1 from 15 at Pinckney to 32 at Hillcrest. The district also lists conting ency staffing added to reduce class sizes at Broken Arrow kindergarten and first, Cordley third and fifth, Kennedy kindergarten and fifth, New York fifth, Pinckney fourth, Prairie Park second and third, Quail Run third, Sunflower kindergarten, Sunset Hill first, and Woodlawn fourth and fifth.
